Show fl Com. -4- Three flocks of sheep belonging to Indians have developed scabies the past winter and are being dipped by our Stockman, under the supervision of state authorities. Two of the three flocks were "cared" for the past season by permittees who used the range and agreed to "take care of and dip" the Indians' sheep. I am of the opinion that our agency Stockman here has a most important work in this connection, and I am undertaking to see that he does it. Wo are building two vat3 and all hands seem to be heartily cooperating in an effort to attend to our own business in such matters and not trust to the graces of any permittee to keep our sheep dipped. Messrs. Murdock and Carter attended the Ouray council, having been among them during the 24 hours previous, and they were given such opportunity to speak to the Indians as they desired. Their party did not arrive in time to be present at the Whiterocks meeting, but they saw several of the leading Indians of those tribes while here and in every case their arguments in favor of the Indians favoring the granting of a grazing permit were futile. The gentlemen advise me that they plan to again take the matter up with the Office in a further effort to get the permit in spite of the opinions of the Indians and myself. I am therefore reporting the conditions in full, not because I think the |
