But let us not turn away in scorn from tho argument even when it speaks in this extravagant way. Suppose we listen. Nay, suppose wo grant the substantial truth of tho facts alleged. Suppose we ceneede that tho pauper in any of our great cities is as wretchedly situated as the American Slave, physically, socially, intellectually, yes, and even morally. Such a concession we cannot make.
