Show THE CHURCH REVIEW.
PRESBYTERIAN.
VOL. 3. / SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, APRIL 28, 1895. / No. 18.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN,

The subject for the prayer-meeting next Wednesday evening will be, "The Parable of the Great Supper and its bearing upon reaching the masses with the Gospel, Luke 14:16-24.
Beginning today, the time for our evening services will be changed. The church service will begin at 8 in the evening, the Young People's society will begin its meeting at 6:50 and the Junior Society at 5:15. The Wednesday evening prayer meeting will begin at 7:45.
It is expected that Dr. Wishard will preach in our church at 8 o'clock this evening. Since Dr. Wishard not only has something important to say when he preaches, but a most interesting way of saying it, we urge the people to come out tonight and fill the house. A service of song will precede the preaching.
A week from next Tuesday evening, the Men's League invite the members of the church and congregation to a social gathering in the church from 8 to 10:30. An interesting program may be expected, with refreshments following.
The church was most pleasantly remembered by Mrs. Terhune from her home in San Jose, California, by the box of beautiful calla lilies which she sent. They rendered beautiful service on Easter Sunday; and also at the church social the following Thursday evening. But we would rather have Mr. and Mrs. Terhune and their children back here with us, than many boxes of lilies, however attractive.
By a vote of fifty-seven to twenty-one the Constitutional Convention refused to submit prohibition to the vote of the people. Over ten thousand voters, from almost every part of the territory, had petitioned the Convention to submit the question to the people. But although the Convention had voted to incorporate into the first article of the Constitution a statement about the sacred right of petition on the part of the people, they trampled their own votes as well as the rights of the people under foot by voting to ignore the petitions of the people in regard to prohibition. The misstatement of historic facts in regard to prohibitory legislation, by half a dozen prominent members of the Convention, or the down-right ignorance of the facts whichever it was, was positively disgraceful.
The hearty thanks of all the friends of prohibition are due to Mr. Frank Pierce for his clear-cut and most convincing speech in the Convention last Wednesday afternoon, in behalf of prohibition and the importance of submitting it to the people.
It was most interesting to watch his quick and effective undermining of the wretched sophistry and perversion of facts by three or four pettifogging attorneys through his citation of the laws of Congress and the decision of the U. S. Supreme court, which these blundering attorneys had ignored or were ignorant about.

WESTMINSTER.
There will be an "Experience Social" on Monday evening, May 6th at 7:45 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hurley, 570 West Fourth South street, under the auspices of the Y. P. S. C. E. Those coming will bring the money earned by special work and will relate their experiences in gathering it. In any case everyone is invited.
We have to specially thank those who had charge of the musical arrangements for the Easter services and the friends who kindly gave their help in singing, also we desire to return thanks for the use of the organ so kindly lent.
The subject for prayer meeting next Wednesday will be the "Unfruitful Fig Tree." Read Luke chapter 13 verses 6 to 10. The teachers' meeting (immediately after) will be led by Miss Wood-worth. We want the stimulus of a better attendance at this preparation.
The Ladies Aid of the Westminster church will serve a lunch at Mrs. Agnes Reed's 273 W. 3rd South on Thursday, May 2nd from 5 to 8 o'clock p.m. The ladies are quite anxious for a liberal patronage, as the proceeds will go toward the carpet for the church.

|
