Show Somli, "I will drag you." Somli.tried to move but was caught in a whirlpool. Coyote was heavier than any tree branch. He fought to keep up. His strength was fast going and the bank was far away. The water was making the pool wider and wider. A wave came and started him moving to the shore. His strength was going. Gasping and choking, Coyote's hand released from Somli's hair. He is drowning, thought Somli. He caught his arm, put it over his neck. A wave came and covered them both. Then, Somli felt the ground and dragged Coyote out of the water to the shore. Washed to the shore was Somli's pouch. With only enough life to crawl, Somli put his arms forward to touch the dead rabbit and the blue feather in the pouch. Somli knew nothing more until he saw his father standing over him. His mother said he was coming. "It was a flash flood," said Somli, The boy, Coyote, who sleeps, would have drowned." "And the horse who is caught in bridle?" asked his father. "The horse of Coyote," answered Somli faintly. "His hogan?" asked his father. "To the east, where the road turns," answered Somli. "Lie quietly. I will take the boy home." He went' to the bush, untangled the bridle and brought the horse to where Coyote lay, lifted him in his arms and was soon on his way to the hogan. When he returned, he told Somli how the family thought Coyote was dead. The brothers and sisters began screaming and crying and would scratch at him for killing Coyote. Then the |
