Show 2 comes'". He held the feather high and his wabbly legs jumped up and down- He turned to see tears running down his father's cheek, "Are you sad?", he asked, "When I am not?" "No, I was glad", said his father, "Glad the blue feather came to you." He picked up the blanket from the ground, motioning his son to follow. Somli struggled to the wagon seat by himself, knowing his father was watching. He looked at the blue feather holding it tightly so it wouldn't blow away. He was thinking about tomorrow when they would ride again to the Red Pool and swim. From there, his father would take the road to Moonlight Water. He would walk home alone. Alreadv he was stronger. Did he not climb the wagon alone? Certainly did' he not swim and drag a tree across the Pool? Tomorrow he would walk back from the Red Pool to the hogan to take his father's place while he was away. His mother and brothers and sisters were delighted with the blue feather Somli brought home. As each one touched it, they knew the meaning of it. The father went to work and made a safe place to keep the feather in Somli's leather pouch. Just as was planned, Somli rode to the Red Pool with his father. Together they swam. When his father drove away to Moonlight Water Somli was left to wonder how he was to take his father's place when he could not chop the wood, tend the goats, nor carry the water. "To be wise is to be strong," his father had said. He was thankful he had the blue feather, now the little wagon was out of sight. |
