Show 602 because of the rolls getting wet. He has no pictures from North wash down. He did not have the whole set made. R. 1460. Re- direct examination( R. Vol. S- pp. 1461- 1465.) At that time the only people living at Lee's Ferry were Johnson and his wives and children. When he went down the river he got out of the river at Lee's Ferry on the left hand side and from there went up to Houserock Valley, a distance of about thirty miles from the river. R. 1461. There was no read or trail over that strip of the country. From Houserook Valley he went to Kanab, but does not know the distance in miles. There was a building at Houserock, occupied by a man who accommodated people with meals and lodging and ran a post office. He rode from Houserock up ever the mountain, which was pretty rough as it was just a country road. He does not know how large Kanab was, there being a church, a few stores, telegraph office and post office there. R. 1462. From Kanab they went to Milford, and from Milford to Salt Lake on the railroad. The road from Kanab to Milford was pretty bad in places, being just a country road. He does not know how far the survey line was eventually carried down through the canyon. He could not positively say that the line was carried as far as Lee's Ferry on the first expedition. |
