Show Healthy People 2010 Lois Haggard Ph and Tong Zheng S Utah Department of Health Office of Public Health Assessment The public health system strives to improve the nationhealth by looking for ways to prevent the premature onset of disease and disability improve access to needed health care and help all Americans achieve healthier more productive lives One means of addressing the nationhealth care needs involves tracking and publicizing information on the status of Americans health and our health care systems Publicizing our progress providesroadmap and communities individuals for professionals so they may take specific steps to ensure that health goals are being met Toward that end the Healthy People 2000 national health objectives were published in 1990 by theS Public Health Service States responded by identifying priority objectives and developing reporting systems for them As the year 2000 passed the objectives have been revised and expanded The resulting Healthy People 2010 HP2010 objectives are billed as the prevention agenda for the Nation They represent the current view of the most significant preventable threats to the nationhealth and provide goals to reduce those threats The overarching purpose of HP2010 is promoting health and preventing illness disability and premature death Within that purpose HP2010 embraces two central goals Increase quality and years of healthy life Eliminate the health disparities Making the elimination of health disparitiescentral goal isdeparture from the HP2010 objectives which listed separate goals for various income ethnic and racial groups who had historically suffered from poorer health status HP2010 sets the expectation that all segments of the population are entitied to the same opportunity to be healthy In all there are 467 national health Department of Health and Human Services 1990 Healthy People 2000 National Health Objectives Prevention Promotion and Disease Washington C S Departmentof Health and Human Services Goverment Printing Office objectives that are organized into 28 focus areas Forfull lst refer to the HP2010 document or visit the website at http wwhealth gov healthypeople As an example Focus Area 22 is Physical Activity and Fitness It includes objectives such as the following Objective 222 Increase the proportion of adults who engage regularly preferably daily in moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes per day to at least 30 Objective 224 Increase the proportion of adults who perform physical activities that enhance and maintain muscular strength and endurance to at least 30 Objective proportion 226 Increase of adolescents the who engage in moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes onor more of the previousdays to at least 35 Objective 22 15 Increase the proportion of trips made by bicycling Increase trips of less than five miles made by adults to at least and trips to school of less than two miles by schook-age children and adolescents to at least Healthy People 2010 has also carried forward the practice of identifyingsmall set of objectives ascore set of measures for use in community planning The Leading Health Indicators reflect the major public health concerns in the United States and were chosen based on their central relevance to public health and their abilty to motivate action The 22 objectives part of the larger set of 467 are organized into ten areas S Department of Health and Human Services for Improving 10 2000 Healthynt Health Washington C S Departme of Health and Human Services Goverment Printing Office 142 Digital image 2005 Marriott Library University of Utah Al rights reserved |
