The theme of the clinic this year will be directed toward specialized ins-tructian for those instructors who the Board may determine needs special help. DISCU3SION: There are many instructors who are not keeping abreast of the current trends in their teaching and skiing ability. Others teach at small areas and have little or no opportunity to ski and teach in the higher brackets. It was further discussed that the Board of Directors discuss each instructor and place individuals in respective classes for special assistance. Provisions should also be made to offer help to all instructors who are not certified but who have an active interest in teaching, such as the Deseret News Ski School, the COlUlty Ski School and the Univcrsit: of utah, etc. A committee shall be organized by Bill Lash, President, to organize the spring clinic. NEW BOOINlS): CHANGE IN BY-lAWS Ethics of certain instructors, that is, bad credi t with sld shOl'S or use of poor judgment while free skiing (skiing too fast for hill conditions) require that some disciplinary action be administered by this Board. It is inexcusable that a certified instructor should extend his privilege and discoWlt at a ski shop and make no effort to pay his account. It also indicates poor judgme!~ for a certified instructor to ski at dangerous speeds on crowded ski slopes, ena-angering the safety of students and other ::;:dinc; on the slope. We need a by-law that will allOi-T for expulsion or discipline from the association in these cases. It was seconded and passed by the Board and Bill Lash will have his attorney check our by-laws to detenninc a way that this problem can be solved by incorporating it in the by-laws in such a manner as not to be discriminating. NEW BUSINE3S: INCREASE IN Dum It was seconded and passed by the Board that the dues be changed from $5.00 to $10.00 a month. NEW BUSINmS: REIMBURSEMENT OF F'UNIXJ TO BILL !ASH FUR GASOLINE EXPENSE TO MAGIC MOUNTAIN. It was seconded and passed that the Treasurer refund $17.00 to Bill r.,Q~h fo1' the trip with Keith A. LatlGC to Magic MOWltain. NEW BUSn~: *It was seconded and passed that in the future, if any person of the ISIA travels to air' another area with its teaching problems or puts on a clinic, the ISIA will pay that e} person or persons $25.00 per day, plus any out of pocket expense to be approved by the Board. - NEW BUSINrnS: That Hugh Olander write Don Reinhardt a letter advising him about John Church in regar( to John's status in the ISIA. MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING INTERMOUNTAIN SKI INSTRUCTORS ASSOCIATION FollmTing are the minutes of the Board of Directors of the Intermountain Ski Association held April 23, 19GO. Those in attendance: Dan Kelly, Bill Lash, Ken RiGgs, Bill Cook, Alf Engen; Lou Lorenz, Bill Ashley, vloody Anderson, M. Earl Miller, Merlin Bingham, Hugh Olander and Barry Corbet. Tr..ere "rere some grievances "Ti tb the members of the Board about the management concerning the banquet last evening. Bud Temple is going to talk to the Board about his grievances. BUD TEMPLE: "This is not a thing to say "Then I am not prepared, but last night I got quite upset due to a situation I got into and could not do ~~ything about. As you all know, and it seems it wound ,-lP that it cost me $24 to eat dinner, ,.;rhich I did not eat, and I live here. This made me very much upset. This and other things that have happened, like the meeting the other night. I want to speak as a member of this organization, since I paid dues to it and I feel it has some responsibilities to me. I feel you people ,.;rho run the organization, and I don I t think I am getting what I deserve from the organi;c;ation. If I am given a job to do I "lvill do it. I am not the least bit afraid to work - so what happens. Because things are not done, and the officers who you elect, which you are lucky that you have some that will '.[ork, are not given the help they need and they wind up doing the work. themselves. Consequently they do not come out in the best interest of the organization. It is not because they are not good people, but I don't think you people are giving them the direction they need. I think at the meeting the other niGht, I stood up and aSl"ed for a report on some things that were passed a year ago in the meeting, and this could not be given because nothing has been done on a couple of them. Now this is the way the thing runs. I decided that I am going to quit working too. Tney are not going to stick me with any details or ,.;rork, or why should I go out and teach this week-end. I can go to my ski school director and ask to be put to work and make some money, so I decided its not worth it gettinG myself into situations that are bad when this organization and the people here run it, they are elected and they should do it. That is why I ,vould not want to be elected. Looking around here, I see that some are absent. Now I have had my little say and I will quit, but I wish you would tell the people that are not here what I had to say." KEN RIGGS: "You mentioned that it cost you $24.00." BUD TEMPLE: "I tried to do everything as quick as I could and then it got rushed and confused." KEN RIGGS: "On behalf of the association I don't feel that BUCL should stand this expense alone.·· BILL LASH: "Do you have the names of those people or know who they might be"?" BUD TEMPLE: "No. In the confusion and the rush of getting everybody seated because of everyone beinG in a r118h and wanting to get in, it "las quite confusins so I did not get the names." -2- BUD TENPLE: "I just wai1t to set H straight 'I·rith the Association. BUD TEMPLE: ·'1' 11 tell you the mot;ion I made 8. year ago)( L18 people were up for re-ex8L1ination should be notified t\m vveeks before the Clinic. He have then: in specialized groups this year and when we make the notification with sumliler or fall, vie cannot rush into this. It is a very delicate problem in re-examining somebody as they come back to you and say who are you to say I should be re-examined." BUD TEMPLE: "You got guys on your own Board W1.0 I feel should be re-examined. " BILL LASH: "It is a very delicate situation, and what we try to do to ease it in a little bit and make these people aware Ghat at the annual meeting down there they are going to have to shape up or ship OUG. We put them in special groups and a lot of them came out of it. Their skiing brought them out of it. vIe are going to give them every opportunity as this is a very tough thing. Was there anything else, Bud that there 'Ivas not any action taken on? I! JUD TEMPLE: "Well because I made the motion on it last year, I wondered what happened to it." BILL LASH: "It is a very delicate situation isn't it, Bud." BUD TEMPLE: "Yes, but they have to do something about it. It isn't my complaint what the officers are doing about it, but what the Board is doing about it." BILL LASH: skiing profession. to help." "Hell Bud, I still don't think you are being fair with your Your attitude that you are not going to do anything is not going BUD TEMPLE: "I ma going to be like everyone else. In the past I have been willinG to worl,,;: like ever:yrone else J nOlv I don't think I am going to be very conciencious. If BILL LASH: "He found that the dinner last night cost Bud Temple out of his pocket, $21[.00 which at the moment Bud will not accept from the Association. We feel that we owe Bud $24.00 and for the time being we will let him simmer down so to speak. --rt1t. X There is a discussion now at thTs CliniC, and generally agreed there is some unfortunate i1al,penings in regard to the banquet and general meeting and things that go on in the lodge. HOI,rever, the Secretary d:td not write a letter to Kirby Dawson but calked to him and discussed this matter and told him that the Board felt that he not be granted his Associate card. Mr. Kirby Dawson wrote another letter to the Board requesting that his problem be checked on again by the Board of Directors.
