Show C. Siegel side 2. p.25 have today. And they meet a certain amount of times, I think once a month. And-- but even the community center doesn't have strong religious practices. They must observe certain things in order to not vioate the people who have those observances, but the kitchen at the Jewish Community Center is not a kosher kitchen. but you're not permitted to bring pork into it or shell fish or things that are wrong. And if I had my way, I would never let them mix dairy and meat and poultry products because I think that that is ot as difficult thing to avoid. I don ' t think that we have to bring in kosher meat in there and put it on non-kosher plates and pots and pans, I think that's ridiculous,T~=aA that ' s hypocritical. Whereas at the syna-gogue, you see there are two separate kitchens. There's a dairy kitchen and there's ameat kitchen . LF If you could--make any changes in the jewish comm . what? concern? CS Well,even though I was one of the first advocates of the ~i~s~ merger system, I might say that it hasn ' t proven i tself now, in later years, to be what I would have anticipated . I think that people wh come into your community should have the opportunity of coice and in our community as it is now set up, there is no ¢ choice . You either belong to Kol Ami or you don't belong to the synagogue. And I have seen people who are more strongly religious have it very bad for them, in fact, the man who's the cantor now at Kol Ami doesn't ffeel that it is as religious as he can cope with andlive with and he ' s going to return to Sweden. And pep= people who are true reform jews are not comfortable. I think there are problems . I don't know if the problems, in fact, itsapparent again in the religious school because some how or other children learn certain relgio~s practices and certain amounts of hebrew and certain amount of how you--the traditions and all. And they can apply b either, you see. But somewhere along the line, I think the prayers and the i participation was a little better when I was/~oung person . I sense it today. Inother words, various protestants branches, you can remain a protestant. You don't have to be in this group or that group, you can pick your selection Now, I don ' t think you have this i free choice in catholicsm or mormonism. LF It ' s more structural .... |
