Show C. Siege] side 2 p.23 but I do give basically my greatest effort to jewish organizations. Now, I separate organizations from synagogues. LF How is t:hat. CS Because the org. take me out into the larger community area, whether it's the larger jewish community, or if it's Israel, or whatever it is, I have taken myself out of tre small 300 nembership synagogue set up and have expanded myself into thousands. And that is my jewish identificaton, is my participation in jewish organizations. Basically national organizetreons because that's where I can do my greatest scope of work. LF That's where JouL inspriation come. CS It doesn't come fro~tanding up-- well, and I will give another reason for it. I can read all the prayers that are in english, but unfortunatel, I have no hebrew educ.?.tion at e1ll. So whenever tr.ey read the prayers, sing the songs and do the chanting t~ and all in Hebrew, that's as foreign a language as if I were over in Italy and it ~i ceases to have meaning for me because I have to interpret it oy read~ng t:-e otrer side of --from the hebre~page to tre english page t:o even know what I'm doing. And I t:hink it's somewhere, that lackig in my education. Where if I can do any number of trings in t:he orgniz2tions and they're all talking my language. LF There rmst oe a lot of peple like yourself at Kol Ami, even though the cong. the merger-- there must be alot: of people like yourself and alot of people who can read hebrew, are very observant jews ... is there a conflict .. C~ No because they set vp their services on Fr1day nights, it: is more of a reform type of service. There is more english in it:. And the trad~tional songs that we hav~ learned, even though we don't know what: they say, t:hat: we can sing in Hebrew. And all of that -- has that: leaning. Then they have sabbath services saturday morn1ng. AND THAT:;:, for tr~ more Ortrodox or1ent:ed people. Ana they manage iL that way. Now, during the high holy days, i~'s a combinat~on of tne j~ws. BuL I would say the people who are-- the fringe of botr are not nappy. ln oLher words, if you were strongly reform then you'doe turned off on almost any hebrew thats given andifyou were strongly orthodox, that is not your bag! at All! They try to compromise--the ~. And I think they've succeeded to a greater extent:.than most congregations couldhave coped with. Very difficult [obstacle] |
