Show Cecelia Siegel May 17, 1982 LF 17 May 1982. In Cecelia Siegel's home. when were you born. CS May 21, 1910. In Cedar Rapids, Iowa. My parents moved to South Dakota when I was a very young girl, child. And we lived there until a tornado and a lightening striking the house and some other horrible happenings and then my father said, "we've got to move from here." And they decided to rove out west. [The tornado] struck the house that we were living in. LF cs I think I was about 5, 5 or 6. I will never forget it. It was a horrendous experience. And then of course, and then, later, when we went over to my aunt's home. The lightening struck her home and we went down--they have they did have storm celleFs .. And we spent the night~ inme storm celler. So I think the couple of disasters as well as the wheat field cathing fired triggered our westward HO. That was your wheat field, means of livelihood. Of course we had cattle and everything. But actually they were home steading. In those days, they used to give tracts of land to people and then if they farmed the land they lived there, why they became owners. And I think they continued to have the iand worked by people and many years later, they sold it. LF So you lost pretty much everything, your home, ... CS Well, basically, yes. My father--but he had been working for BW HArris wool company. Going out and buying furs, raw furs. So he had a mode of living. Al~~~gg~ And so, he, when his brother was living in Cheyenne, he induced him to come west and he felt that this area, Utah,was wide open and so we first arrived in Ogden, when I was about 9. I guess. And we lived there in Ogden, Utah for about a year and a half. And then this was a better center, so he moved here with our family and my mother. And opened up the American Fur Company. I think it was originally American Hide and Fur here in Salt Lake. West South Temple. And some property where the Salt Palace is located. Part of the Salt Palace. And hemved from Hides and Furs to Just Furs. And then finally manufacturing furs. And finally into the retail business. And when I was grown and had graduated ~Fem college, why, I went into the store and Ibecame the buyer for the retail portion of the business and advertising manager. But actually, I've lived here since I've been about 10, 10~ years of age. LF So basically you lived in Iowa. CS As a child. I was born in Iowa. But actually moved to So. Dakota as a very young.child. And thento Ogden. And then Salt Lake Citv. |
