Interviewed by Leslie Kelen, Harry Doctorman (b. 1919) recalls his childhood in Salt Lake City and the congregation Shaary Tzedick. He talks about the meat-packing business he inherited from his father (including comments on unions, kosher butchering, and modernization). He also talks generally about his Jewish upbringing and more specifically about his bar mitzvah, meeting his wife, getting married, and relationships with Mormons. 96 pages. |

Show OHI Harry Doctorman 3-6-86 s2:17 She's Jewish on both sides. For awhile, she said she's a shiksa. She says, "How could Harry intermarry to the shiksa." We had to explain it to her that she was Jewish but she couldn't talk Jewish. LK Where did you go to public school. HD Well, public school I went to the Grant Schoo\, on Sixth South and First West, right where the TriArc Motel is now. And then we movedto Nineth South and Second East, and I went to the Sumner School that was on Sixth South and Third East. LK What didyour parents speak to you at home, what language. HD Well, they spoke alot of Yiddish and a lot of English. But, they spoke Yiddish back and forth so I could - you know, I picke it up. I can speak a little Yiddish. Great but - I can get by. Wife My grandmother loved him because he spoke Yiddish. HD I come down to talk to her Grandmother. Sheneverheard anybody talking Yiddish. Boy, when Ittalked to her, I really made it with her![ both laugh] LK That was thepasssport to the heart. what was school likefor you? Public school. HD WEll, it was fair. _I mean, it wasn't the greatest thing. But I got ~by. Band C. I got fair grades. LK Didyou run into any anti Jewish feeling? HD No~~ I really didn't. Wife ~ said only __ once j.n Salt La_ke. HD When was that? |
