Interviewed by Leslie Kelen, Harry Doctorman (b. 1919) recalls his childhood in Salt Lake City and the congregation Shaary Tzedick. He talks about the meat-packing business he inherited from his father (including comments on unions, kosher butchering, and modernization). He also talks generally about his Jewish upbringing and more specifically about his bar mitzvah, meeting his wife, getting married, and relationships with Mormons. 96 pages. |

Show OHI Harry Doctorman 3-6-86 sl:7 the ice to keep it cold. They didn't hage automatic refrigeration. A lot of them in those days, that did~n't come til later. When !was just a kid, I remember we used to have Auerbach's Co., they're on third south. They used to be a big department store .. And they used to have abig meat market down in the department store and an elevator. And they'd bring the beef down and I'd have to carry it about a block til we'd get back in the meat market, take it down on an elevator - way onthe end fof the building to the meat market. LK You remember seeing the first animal you ever saw killed, slaughtered? HD No !don't think so. LK You remember ~eing animals. HD Ob, yeah, we were killing lOOs of them, after I took over. We were killing 300 a day. LK That rust havebeen much later. HD Oh, yes. LK I was wondering, what - when you~re a kid, what was your first. HD Well, I'd go in the cooler- I never really watched much in the slaughtering -you know, they'd have them already slaughtered and they'd hang like half a beef in the cooler. Carcass beef. And my father would show me -- this is a bull, this is a cow, and this steer- Andhe ~s teaching me ever since I was 6 or 7 - ---yers old. - LK Wereyour parents religious people at the time. HD Yes, my folkds were always religious. |
