Show Herman Bernstein June 16 p. ~ ~~ You knew you were supposd to go. You knew you had to be bar mitz vahed, so yo u went. Tha's all. Kids today, I 'm sure, woul mave a different attitu de for some reaon or ano t her. J What was it like on your bar mitzvah? H I remember it vaguel ly. That my parents having a party at home. Not hi ng l ike it i s today. J Reading the Haf Torah, do you remember what it was l ike getti n gp and rea di ng i t .. H Not too much. J What do you mean not like it is today. H As far as the children are concerned. I think t if t hey rebe l and say t~ I'm not going to cheder, I think parents just l~t it go, and they dont go. I f we went becau se of respect ± for our parents. It was instilled in us that t ha t ' s what you t te suppoed to do as a Jew-and you do it. J today the kids question. H Yeah. J Your sons [2 sons] both bar mitzva hed. H Oh, yeah. J They didn't rebel. H Well, it was a little has s l e. But I t hink theydid it out of repsect for me pretty much. J What about their children, do you th i nk they'll have bar mitz . H I doubt it very much. J Some children have become even more r eli gious than thei r parents . Almost all people have the respone you have- that children move away. H I remember one nigyt at Fri day night Se rvices. Two young girls sitting right next to us. J H ~ J H H That were stangers to the city and to the community and after the service, I askedhow they enjoyed it and they said i t was too much English, not enough Hebrew. They were from New York. So I think throughout the count ry. Not in SLC, you know, afterall, we're out in the sticks. But as I un derstand t hroughout the country there's a trend tewa~- fr the younger generation go i ng more and more, leaning more towf ds coonservatism and orthodox, more than they have i n t he past. HOw come. I don't know. Whether i t ' s the communi t ies who offer more to their children than we are. What do you think woul d make a young person want to turn more towards religion. I do~'t know i f i t ' s t he attitude ~ ~e parents. The background ~, his family or just what ever . I r ea l ly don ' t know . I've fel t sometime it was t oo much Engli sh, even though I don't understand what ' s going on in Hebrew. H Me. Too . Me, too. Now, whet her it j ust reminds youf of days when you we re in the synagogue with your parents . but fo r me hea r a good can t or , I just love i t . And the eReF~- choi r j ust turns me off. |
