Show Herman Bernstein June 16 p ~ Z J you would say, ho~ many fami l ies belonged to orthodox synagogue. H Oh maybe 30-40 families. At that time, there was the congregation Montefoire, which they left at that time. J More people talk about the B'nai Israel .~e~e-tAafter th~Montefoire than the H _.s::<.'~ u!.-t ht~'Cj J so whe~ did that one disband. H Oh. I was bar mitzvahed there. So many I was like 15 years old so that's 55 years ago. That it disbanded, I think. [reason] Jews j ust don't get along with Jews, you know. I guess there were constant hassles as to v1ho would run the synagogue, who would be the president, the vice president, the raising of funds~d that sort of thing. J Probably in some ways the community was maybe smal l i~l for having so many synagogues. H Oh, that too. And the)/ ir . y~~ nad the problems of support1ng, I remember we had a cantor. We didn't have have a rabbi but they had a canter [ orthodox cantor] Oh, yes. A man by the name of S _______ kovsky , I'll never forget him. [what happened to him?] J H J H J H He left town . He got run out of town or something. You seem like you have very fond memories of A4~~ I do. Ido. Cause your dad was one of the ones who started that. Yes, that's right.And he got teed off and went back to the Montefoire. So it was just over an arguement that he left andother people started to leave. That's right. Yeah. In fact, there's still a cemetery there. At congregation ~ ~c)( . [where] Just beyond the Montefoire Cemetery. I don't know areere. '[Dad buried there?] No. No. He was buried at Montefoire. [he had Yeah. Yea h. J So when you were in school, you felt pretty accepted except for those problems .. H Yes, [probl ems that happened] just as a child. J When did you leave that downtown area. How old when moved out of west side. how many already lef H Never did. Stayed right there on second east, third east, those homes are still there. J Your homeis still standing. H Oh, yes. Stayed there until, I'm trying to remember, mother-- after dad passed away and my two brothers were married. Then, we moved into a little area that's called ~uster~Court . And it's still there. That's between oh second and third east and maybe 3rd and 4th east and right off of 5th south if I recall. Runs north and south. J Was that a jewish community too? H Thre were some jewish people living in that little court. J But it seemed like even when the jew came, they seemed to cluster together. H Yes they did. J And they clustered around the synagogues. H ¢Yes. J When did you start dating. ~II Did you have trouble meeeting Jewish girls? |
