Andyo u gotta ha ve a c ommuni t y ente r . It's unfrotunate , I think, that most of--I sho ul dn' t say, most, but many J ews in th e commun don't help support it. And it ' s the old timers who are ca r ryi ng t he burden. J Why old t mers feel respn. H I don't know. I don't know . I just feel l i ke i t ' s my duty a nd I s hould do it . My children were educated here and grown up he r e. I s hould suport i t . J so even bough sometimes financial ly it ' s bee n hard f or you, you really haven't-- H It hasn't been hard for me . J You seem t o ha ve wanted to carry through something of your parents. So that's what makes you think your c hi ldren would want to ... H Th at's right . And t hey kn ow--they realise and known that we have been a supporter of the J ewish co mmu ni ty wh ich I think has made an impression on them. J ~ H o w do you fee l the com munity here is in relation to Israel. Is there talk about moving ot Israel, going, visiting .... J H Ju st 11o ng my friends, of t hose that I soci a 1 i ze with vie' ve been to I srae 1. And of course, we loved it . And another couple, friends of ours, just left this m~nhg, for Israel. Their gr~~ dson was go i ng to be bar mitzvahed in Israel. [general attitu~e of ~ommunity towards Israel?] I say, I can't tell you what the general community;~&~~t~d~n6~·what my friends attitudes are. They're pro-Israel, naturally, s ure. [when Israel became statefeeling] Just a joyous occassion a I recall . [were there celebrations?] Oh sure there were. J You are in a more isolated community-what's it like to be jewisR-in big important events H Not being here, All I can t ell you is what I was told. My oldest~other Abe and his wife Clare were very very active as far as the Jewish USO was concerned. And they did a fantastic job of entertaining the Jewish soldiers. AT the old Covenant House.
