Show Bluegrass Clippings, cont. from page 3 Demerath. Congrats to Sally and Craig. Older & In The Way The classic album Old And In The Way, released over twenty years ago featuring Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, et al, is reputed to be the all-time top selling bluegrass album. And now there's going to be a chance to duplicate the record. David Grisman has unearthed the 27 additional songs that were recorded in 1973 at the same time as the original OITW masters, and they are being prepared for release on CD by Acoustic Disk. Expect Volume 1 in mid-February '96. I cain't hardly wait. Olympic Bg Maybe Bill Andrews reports hearing tell that the Gillis Brothers, and possibly Alison Krauss, have been invited to perform at the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics in Atlanta next year. No confirmation yet. Kathy Thile, mom of mando prodigy Chris Thile, reports rumors from the folks at Sugar Hill that there will be a festival of Southern music and dance going on throughout the Olympics. Several Sugar Hill artists will be showcasing, including ChrisT. and perhaps the Nashville Bluegrass Band. Not during the opening ceremonies, but an exciting venue nevertheless. Eric Henry, editor of the Tahoe World, remarks "Man, if Alison plays at the Olympics opening I hope she'll do 'Oh, Atlanta.' That would be so cool." No Mo' Rich & Taylor Banjos As of late November, the Rich & Taylor Banjo Company is a thing of the past. By the time you read this, the last instruments bearing the R&T brand will have been produced. Circumstances behind the breakup are obscure. However, Mark Taylor (one half of the former partnership) has purchased the inventory, equipment, fixtures, tooling, trade styles (trademarks), etc. and started a new company called "Crafters of Tennessee, LLC". His intention, we hear, is to continue producing banjos under the "Tennessee" name he used in the '70s. Greg Rich has no connection with this new company. Instead, informed sources say that Greg, Jim Berlile and unnamed individuals are currently talking with several parties who have expressed an interest in a new banjo line. No further details at this time. Riverrun Past Eve And Adam's The following is from a press release circulated on the InterNet. Rumors of a new micro- 4 Intermountain Acoustic Musician, January 1996 phone cable made by a company called Canare. The c ables are called Star Quads, and they are supposed to reduce noise/hum by using a 4-wire system rather than the standard 2-cable. Four wires, as two twisted pairs of wires, each pair carrying one side of the mike line, would tend to nullify hum pickup caused by induction, usually of 60-Hz. line noise. "He would be at least as outstanding, both in size and in popularity, as the hippopotamus," an unnamed source stated. To raise needed funds to build a cage and swimming tank for him, the Zoo is planning a Banjo Festival and Kite Flying Contest for later this month. Kites must be in the shape of a large bank check. The one that stays up highest, longest, without crashing, wins. Admission is by invitation only. Watch your mailbox.
