Notes from the Board The lAMA board of directors met on December 11, 1995. The attendance was refreshingly high and we covered several important issues that are summarized here. Musical Diversity Committee lAMA's goal is to promote and support acoustic music in all forms. This can be accomplished by several means, including articles for the magazine, announcements and creation of flyers for events, and production of concerts. In looking back through the magazine and concert lineups for the last several months, it would appear that we are doing well to achieve diversity. To ensure that we achieve excellence in this regard, I have asked three board members to form a musical diversity committee. If you have an area of musical interest that we can support, please contact one ofthe following: J. Scott Iverson, Mark Neihart or Jana Lauer. The Magazine Several individuals have worked extremely hard to maintain the quality of the magazine and to get it out on time. We have reviewed all of the steps involved where we might have some control. These include deadlines for writers, delivery to the printer, a two-day turnaround at the print shop, atta~hing mailing labels and delivery to the postal service. Once the magazines are delivered to the US Postal Service for first class delivery, we are somewhat at their mercy. Sometimes it's one day for delivery and sometimes it's four. I have asked each of the Board members to be responsible for one article for the magazine during the year. We are always in need of articles, and we welcome any contributions from the readership at large. Relationship between lAMA and performing artists The Board had a lengthy d~scussion regarding our relationships with both local and visiting artists. This is a dynamic process, and will require ongoing review and scrutiny. I am going to distill down our current position. We are committed to strong support of the artists. It 2 Intermountain Acoustic MusJcJan, January 1996 is not our desire to turn a large profit at the expense of our performers. On the other hand, we provide a venue, support staff, advertising, ticket production and staff product sales tables. In return for these services, the organization receives a modest fee. We use this fee to produce other concerts. Since some concerts lose money, we need a reserve fund. There was disagreement among the board members whether we should take 10% of product sales. For now, the Board voted to maintain this policy, but it will be subject to ongoing review. Elsewhere in this column, I have made public our financial status, and I concluded that we have supported our visiting artists to the best of our ability. New Board Member Pam Poulson, who has dutifully managed the lAMA mailing list, was elected as a board member. Welcome. Pam is a real idea person, and has also volunteered to help manage a new mailing list database that will be used to send concert announcements. Thanks A special heartfelt thanks to all of the volunteers and performers who made the fundraising concert such a success. We are using the music to build bridges. Kevin McCusker, lAMA president State of the Union Address: The Financial Status of lAMA I have obtained a financial summary from our new treasurer, Jack I. Dahl, and have summarized it.
