The Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Phillips Camp biographies (circa 1940-1974) is a collection of biographical sketches of Utah pioneers submitted to the Phillips Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, in Kaysville, Utah. The individual sketches give insight into the socioeconomic status of European, as well New World, converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the nineteenth century. They contain biographical and genealogical information, as well as descriptions of experiences crossing the Atlantic to America and traveling across the plains to Utah. Minute details of pioneering life in Davis County, Utah, and other frontier outposts of settlement are illuminated. Show Mark Green was born Sept. 14, 1850 at Stoke Heath, near Bromsgrove, Worchestershire (W t 11 tbf ro) England. He was the fonrth chUd and second son ot Henry Green and his wife Mary Ann Lacy Green. While yet a small child his father died. and his mother married a Mr. James Barnett. Very little is known ccmcerning his ear~ life but being born of humble parents he was obliged to work at a very early age, as were mant of the boys of England, to , help supplement the tamilies meager income. Like many other children at that time he was deprived of ~ formal education and was taught little else than thrift and work. Record shows he was baptised .into the L.D.S. church at the age of nine years by Thomas Bennett in the Dodder Hill Parish. When he was seveateen years old he and his older sister, Emily, and a younger half' brother, Ephraim Barnett, ~eft England and sailed tor America. He and Emily both eam.e under the name of their stepfather, Barnett. James Barnett had arrived in Utah two years previously in 1866. 6 n ~ From Journal history Page 1 we quote: 8 The ship John Bright sailed from England (Liverpool) bound for N.Y. June 4. 1868 with company of saints Dl1lliber1ng 722 souls, 176 were from Scandinavia, the rest from the British Isles. 'fhey were six weeks Oft the water. Franklin D. Richards addressed the emigrating saints upon their position and prospects and duties which they ought to perform on their journey. ·Cleanliness, order • un1 ty, good .feiUing toward each other, kindness and assistance of the aged, sick and infirm, and obedience to counsel were topics dwelt upon. Elder James MeGaw was appointed President or the . company, Elder Christopher o. Folkman and ,Frec.irick C. Williams as his counselors. Elder Widerburg add.ressed. the saints in the Banish language, and Charles W. Penrose dedicated the vessel. The ship l.eft Liverpool at four oc. weather pleasant, saints happy. It was intended for the saints to cross the AtJ.antie on a steamer but because of high price ~emands the vOya.ge had to be made in a sailing vessel so that those ot lim.ited means could be aeeomodated. There was little sielmess, one aged lady from England died, one Swedish couple were married during the voyage, the captain was kind. · They arrived in. N.Y. July lJ, a868 and the following day were conveyed to the railroad. They traveled via Chicago and Omaha and then on the Union Paetic railroad to Laramie where the rai.lrGad. terminated. The fare from N.Y. to Omaha was fourteen dollars, fran there to Laramie thirty-five dollars." Frqn Laramie, Wyoming they traveled by mule team to S.L.C. arriving about September 186$. The next few years are rather uncertain as to his whereabouts. We do know he worked at various jobs and locations. From John Barnetts history we learn he went to West Layton and was among the first to p~ow land and plant wheat on what was called the Co-op farm. His halt brother Thomas Barnett was also working there and accidently lost his life in a well. Somehow by saving a little here and there, by frugal living and doing without, they mana~ed to accumulate enough to send for their mother and one sister Eliza. v |
