SKETCH OF JAMES GREEN By Effie Webster J J ames Green , born of English parents in the State of Illinois i n the City of Nauvoo , February 2, 1844 ~ He S'aw the Prophet Joseph Srni th , and lived to see his l ega l successors , s i x in numb er : Brigham Young , John Taylor , v'Vi l ford V: oodruff, Lol"enzo Snow , and J oseph F .• Smith . He l eft h is native l and to come to Utah in the spring of 1849, l anded in October in bhe same year . He was five years old when he left, stayed the winter in Salt La~e City, and moved to Kaysvi l le in the spr1ng , ~ April 10, 1850, iocated on Kays Creek . He came across the plains with an ox team , taking four months coming to this val ley . The mob drove them out in the mi dd l e of the night, and they came here in search of a home . After settl ing here in Kaysvi ll e , the I ndians became troublesome . President Young advised the people to build a fort , wh1ch they built out of mud , a mud wal l twelve feet high , four feet wide at the bas e , and two feet at the t op . After t hey get the fort made , President Young advised them to f eed the I ndians and not to f ight them . They tri ed his plan and found it really successful. One of the b oys in Mr . Green's camp raised some potatoes , carrots , and turnips . One day the squaws came to the camp and stole· all they could carry on the i r backs . This made the owner angry and he ran after them . \1\fhen he CR ught them he ga ve them a good whipping . This made the rest of the Indlans angry and they moved their camp to Bear River . In a f ew days some of the I ndians returned and stole t wel ve of the 8est work horses, which they n ever got but one back, when it go t loose and came back . He was in all of the I ndian 1 Tars , incl uding the Black Hawk war . He Received h i s discharge and returned home in 1858 and moved south . Hi s r eason for moving was J ohn~bn's army came in with the ntention of hang­ing Brigham Young, but they failed to do so . He returned the same fal l . Wh:i.le he was south with the move he wa s scrapp ing and b e ing run by the red skins all the time .
