The Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Phillips Camp biographies (circa 1940-1974) is a collection of biographical sketches of Utah pioneers submitted to the Phillips Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, in Kaysville, Utah. The individual sketches give insight into the socioeconomic status of European, as well New World, converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the nineteenth century. They contain biographical and genealogical information, as well as descriptions of experiences crossing the Atlantic to America and traveling across the plains to Utah. Minute details of pioneering life in Davis County, Utah, and other frontier outposts of settlement are illuminated. Described also are individual occupations and survival techniques along with information on offices held in, and services to, the church and the community. A. 28 Van 1938, Ogden, ut. s. A. 22 Jan 1916 \ During 1853 the "Cape .of Good Hope Mission" was organized in South Africa by Elders Jesse Haven, Leonard Harris and William H. Walker. Elder Walker visited the John Green Home. Margaret heard his message and was converted and baptized in the L. D. s. Church 17 February 1854. Within the next seven months John accepted the faith and was baptized, 29 Sept 1854. Margaret Kirkman was a women of strong character with a strong testimony af the Gospel. In March 1863 she set sail for America with seven of her children Ut Ut and one grandchild. Her husband and one married daughter, Mary Ann Green Robertson, never did come to America. 'When Margaret left .A.f'rica John had a large estate to settle in the oorts and his proper~ and business to sell. In his letters he always said he would come to Zion °Next yearn but he never eame. He died in Alice, Africa in 1883. The ship was over-crowded, and the voyage across the Atlantic was rough and dangerous. Crew and passengers had to pump water which splashed over-board to keep the shmp afloat. '.!hey had paid for cabin fare; however, after a few days everyone was put on rations and there was a near-mutiny among the passengers who had paid $100.00 eaCh for better food. They landed in New York 24 May 1863 and went from there to Florence, Nebraska, then only an emigrant camp. At that. tJ\ime fue United States was engaged in the Civil War. John knew little about the eonflict and did not wish to take part with either side. When he •'as asked by a Union Officer to join the Union Army, he answered him in the Dutch language. The officer imm.edia tely procured the services of an interpreter. Jehn then spoke to the interpreter in 'th.e K'a.fir language. Confused, the officer went away. |
