Show 23:6^/yz THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SALT LAKE CITY 84112 MIDDLE EAST CENTER BUILDING 41 May 14, 1969 Dr. Wendell Phillips International Market Place Eaian Building - Suite 207 Honolulu, Hawaii 96815 Dear Wendell: I expect that by now my old pupil, Professor Robert Craig 4»f the College of Hawaii, must have contacted your office by telephone to alert you as to the untoward circumstances which called for our return from India by the western rather than the eastern route. I left my wife in Cairo to deal with the situation arising from the lamentable loss of her mother, and I pursued my way to the United States. Nothing has grieved me more than the omission of our visit to Hawaii for which I have been looking to enable me to see you in your new setting and discuss with you a couple of items of major importance in case you may be interested in them. Nevertheless, I still intend to fulfill this visit in the not-too-distant future, and I trust that we can make up for that lost opportunity. In the meantime> It will be great if you can, in your incessent peregrinations, stop at Salt Lake City which is the crossways of the American West. But make sure to let me know ahead of the time because, like you in a much smaller way, I am becoming more mobile. During my last journey, I finally arranged the publication of my complete Catalogue Raisonne of the Sinai Arabic Manuscripts in three large volumes a€ Alexandria. In India, I was aiso able to puhlishethe first two volumes of my fourteenth century Arabic Manuscript in the Osmania Series. When I receive my quota, I shall send you copies in spite of the fact that they consist of an Arabic text. I am scheduled for an important Unesco lecture in Sicily during the early Fall. Consequently, I may cross over to Egypt on one side or Italy on the other depending on things at the time. But I continue to cherish planning to see you either here or at Honolulu for there is much of the highest interest on which we can deliberate. I do think that your services to humanity and the humanities will multiply with the passing of years, and friends like myself can only pass certain ideas for your consideration. With affectionate saliams from both of us to you and Shirley. Yours ever, Aziz S. Atiya ASA:jb |
