Show UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, Berkeley 4,California, U.S.A. March 2?,1949. Sadek Bey Gohar,Rector, Farouk University, Bolkeley, Alexandria(Egypt) Dear Sir, Please forgive me for not having written for the last month or so. However,I have been extremely busy in continuing the work of the African Expedition in South Africa as well as making future arrangements from this side for work in Arabia and Sinai. I am enclosing for your interest a copy of our Life magazine article which appeared this week on our recent discoveries in South Africa. As Life has a circulation of over 26 million, which is the largest in the world, this story has done a great deal to keep up interest in the expedition's work. Ir.Robert Eroom, the 82-year-old paleontologist and South Africa's leading scientist, and the specimens arrive in New York in the next two days and I am taking him on a two-week lecture tour across America on his work with the expedition. I am also enclosing a picture story which appeared in the University's official newspaper. The other day I was happy to see Professor Mitwally in a newsreel which was shown here in the United States. Would you please extend to him my best personal wishes and tell him that as yet I have received not one single letter or word from him since I returned to America. I feel very badly about this personally,as I can conceive of no possible explanation for his silence. I am enclosing a copy of a letter just received from Dr. Luter Evans,Librarian of the Library of Congress,Washington,D.C. As you know, this is the world's largest library. The Library of Congress is very much interested in putting up funds, equipment and personnel for our project of photographing the ancient manuscripts at the Monastery of St. Catherine's in Sinai. If you will remember rightly, I discussed this project with you and I also discussed it with the late Norkrashi Pasha, who advised me to wait until the political situation cleared up a bit before we launched this work. My plan would be to operate a very small project within the Monastery of St.Catherine's for approximately three to four months. I would place William Terry, Ey field executive, who has been directing the expedition's activities in my absence,in charge of this work. As Mr.Terry is one of the world's foremost photographers,he would be the ideal man to run this project. As you can see from the enclosed letter from Dr.Evans,we would supply you at Farouk University with copies of all of the manuscripts photographed at no cost to Farouk University. |
