So great would be his importance to the character of the Institute, and so vital his continuity of leadership, that he should be appointed for not less than two, and desirably for three years. He should devote part of his time to scholarship. His duties would include travel to guide the operations of the Institute away from headquarters, and representation of the Institute among Indian scholars and universities. To permit the director to carry these responsibilities, to cope with the individual needs of the Americans at the Institute, and to make arrangements for facilities in Madras, Calcutta, and Delhi, the Institute will also require an administrative officer. To plan and guide language instruction, an American linguist will be required. More than one will eventually be required. Direct language instruction will also be by Indian linguists. Visiting Indian professors, particularly in the field of Indian history and classical thought, will be invited to the Institute. American and European scholars will also be anointed to the staff. Operations of the Institute in Madras, Calcutta, and Delhi may not for some time require local directors. But there will be work to do in those locations arranging graduate students' research, planning advanced language instruction for them, making contacts for Senior Fellows, and planning training activities in the area for Faculty trainees. These responsibilities can be borne by the part-time help of a Senior" Fellow, who would for this purpose be designated as supervising Fellow, and be supported for as much more time in India as these duties of guidance and planning would require - e.g., for an extra semester, Sponsorshipj Control and Management. Control of the Institute vests in a Board of Trustees representing the universities offering graduate training on South*Asia, liberal arts colleges which teach courses on South Asia, and institutions doing research on South Asia. Such a Board, representing fifteen universities,! now exists.
