Show an Monastery of St. Catherine, Mount Sinai, April 5, 1950. Dear Professor 01 Sullivan, Th* ^!f ^ let_?f,°f 16 Januaf* h&s recently reached me in this desolate place. of « ± ? e a d l7*S *?t f ^ 1 ^ this extr*ordinaiy delay. I am here with a *roup of scholars and technicians on a joint expedition from Farouk University and the American Foundation for the Study of Man to microfilm and photograph the formidable %?fi?fi*0t MnJ85r tPt» *"d o f f i c i*l documents belonging to t 5 . great mo^tery for the Library of Confess and my own university. The task is coliasal and I 7 working systematically on the Catalogue Raisonne of a large numbe^of S b S cod! ices and several thousands of ancient scrolls. *«*°ic coa th^o.1^8 iS m?f6}y a lord of Production to explain to you how I am situated these days. It is expected that we shall have to continue until well in the summer. I am not sure whether we shall have another season at Iff. Sinai, for of C o n ^ s 3 °n V*0^98 of the ™rk of the Expedition as well as the Library ngress. ^ ^ «»+*«* J? oome,to **» ^Ject of your letter, I wish first to express my great satisfaction on learning from you that the project of the definitive history of the Crusades is not dead with the passing of the Late Professor LaMonte. Only few people regret his most lamentable death more than I, for, apart from my great appreciation for him as a scholar, I have always looked upon hiS as * sincere personal friend. His death came just at the time when I invited him officially to visit my University and give us a course of lectures on the occasion. I agree with you perfectly that the History of the Crusades must be completed *2 T \ t\tbf* OUr contributlona to it will be the least we can do forWmemory of John LaMonte. As far as I am concerned, I shall try not to let my\ present and rather overwhelming activities at Mt. Sinai affect the Crusades project. Nevertheless, I am certain that you will understand me when I say that theret is a slender possibility that I may not be able to cope with the time limitation set in your letter. On the other hand, I think that my contributions will not\ be much later than the early days of 1951. As soon as the Expedition to Mt. Si*iai is over, I shall resume the work on the Crusades. There is of course a possibility that we meet in Paris this summer during the sittings of the International Congress of Historical Sciences. Then we can go over Jitters. I hope that the circle for the Crusades initiated at th> Congress by John LaMonte will be held in spite of the disappearance of its iniatora With my kindest regards, I remain, Sincerely Yours, Permanent Address s Aziz S. Atiya, Faculty of Arts, Farouk University, Alexandria. |
