Show College of pugei jiamtfr TACOMA 6, WASHINGTON June 18, 1951 Dear Professor Atiya: Thank you so much far your card sent from Southampton. I was hapiy to hear that the slides had arrived safely, but cannot understand why the Runciman did not reach you before you left this country as it was sent to you airmail. lour visit to Taecma will be long remembered and regarded as one of the high spots of the academic year 1950-1951. You made a grand impression upon everyone, and the stimulation which you gave to our academic life is deeply appreciated. Last week the State Department Committee on Foreign Scholarships, etc., notified me that I was not selected for one of the Fulbrights to the Near East. Inasmuch as I had been recommended "by the selectim board the notification did case as a disagreeable shock. Consequently I will not have the pleasure of visiting you in %ypt next year as I had hoped. I think that m^ suggestion that I offer a course in United States histnny at a Turkish University was not welcomed by the Turks. I did at one tiiae teach some .American history and thoi^ht that a genial course might be valuable to Turkish students, but I did know that the Turks do not look with favor upon foreigners teaching history. I should have asked for a research grant, and should not have strayed from my own field. However, I thought that I would be somewhat presumptuous if I offered to teach Near Eastern history and the Ottoman Empire in a Turkish school. I am sony now that I did not do just that. Our weather here has remained lovely, but slightly cool. I am trying to do scathing on the Survey of Hear Eastern history, but it is a very laige job and Ifm afraid I shall not make much progress this summer. Our forty students have left for Europe and I believe that they were intending to drop in on you at Zurich. I hope that they are able to see you and Mrs. Atiya. Meanwhile, I do h^e that you wiHL have a very nice summer in Switzerland. Please give Ey kindest regards to your wife, and best of luck to you. Sincerely yours, . Sheisidine /.fr |
