Show 76 U. of U. Chronicle Year Book Society. In this connection we wish to correct the very general misunderstanding that membership in the society is co-extensive with the Engineering student bod}'. During the present year, however, the society has beeen greatly increased y admitting all students of the Senior and Junior classes to membership and many Sophomores and Freshmen. But as there is yet no organization of the entire Engineering student body, non-members frequently act with the members of the society in many College activities. It is now five years since the Engineering Society came to stay with us. Its coming was regarded as an auspicious event, and its history shows that it has come much nearer to fulfilling the lofty purpose of its organization than most people do to carrying out their New Year's resolutions. According to the preamble of its constitution, it was organized "to encourage original investigation in Engineering and scientific subjects, to acquire a knowledge of the most approved methods of Engineering procedure, and to promote a social spirit among the students and memers of the profession." It is believed that in so far as we live .up to these purposes-purposes whose attainment requires a forgetfulness of ease and self-indulgence, and a devotion to what is best in College life-we are displaying genuine College patriotism, not that spurious form of patriot-open-eyed faith that force exerted is never lost, and so we feel that we ism which is only the blindness of self-infatuation. Rather is it the are exerting our force in the line of healthy and helpful College activities. |
