Show 72 U. of U. Chronicle Year Book Republican Club "Spry I tirades the University." UCH WAS the headline in a special to the Herald, when the powers learned that a College Republican Club had been organized at the State University. At the organization of this Club, Republican University students, for the first time, allied themselves with the G. O. P., and presented a united front. To be convinced that the organization was a pronounced success, one need only remember the result of last November s election in the city, state and nation. Carlson was made president, with Hopkins as campaign manager; and Soule, director of the glee club. Spirited and enthlusiastic meetings were held; campaign literature was distributed, and Carlson made manv speeches upon the "duties of educated men to their country." Riser and Reese were the only Democrats left over, but they made manv Bountiful and East Mill Creek speeches, which always resulted in cinching votes for the G. O. P. The Democratic "duet" did effective service: they went after the Reps' scalps, yelling like demons ; but after election they retired. Their shouts of triumph were then changed to wails of despair, and so they joined in with Soule and shouted lugubriously, "To the victors belongs the spoils." The organization of a College Republican Club was a new venture in Utah, but the success it attained last fall guarantees its continuance, and marks a new period in our political and economical development. ntbersftp (^rcbestra SYMPHONY orchestra at the University of Utah is one of the possibilities of next year. A good' brass band is an assured fact. These are not vague dreams. Until the present orchestra sprang up, the students thought it impossible to form an organization of this kind with anv degree of competency. But now we have a good orchestra, which will be a foundation to build a brass band and a symphony orchestra on. The present orchestra has made an enviable record, having filled nearly one hundred engagements, including the great Junior" Prom. The makeup of the orchestra is as follows : Geo. T. Beesley, violin and leader; Harry E. R. Freeman, piano and manager; F. N. Jenkinson, cornet; L. S. Alexander, trombone; Roy Hatch, clarinet. Besides the above, a good cello player and a bass viol player have signified their intentions of entering college next year. A glee club is also assured. L. E. Cluff has been chosen temporary manager to arrange so that practices may begin immediately after opening of school, next September. |
