Show SYNTHESIS OF MOLECULE-BASED AGNETS VIA REACTIONS WITH METAL IODIDES Bretni S. C. Kennon (Professor Joel S. Miller) Department of Chemistry University of Utah, Salt Lake City, 84112 Magnetic materials are technologically important with ubiquitous application found in all aspects of everyday life. While many magnets are metal based, we are developing organic/polymeric magnets. M(TCNE)2 (M = Mn, Fe; TCNE = tetracyanoethylene) is an organic magnet below 99 and 39 K for M = Mn and Fe, respectively. Saturation mag-netization, Ms, values are indicative of ferrimagnetic behavior. Infrared spec-troscopic and elemental analyses show that in the synthetic route using metal iodides as a starting material [MI2 + 2 TCNE M(TCNE)2], iodine is present, with nominal compositions of Mn(TCNE)1.8(l-)0.2(l2)0.3»yCH2Cl2»zCH3CN [y = 0.75, z = 0.67] and Fe(TCNE)l.64(1-10.36(12)0.0 •yCH2Cl2»zCH3CN[y = 1.35, z = 0.20], Analysis of far-IR spectral data reveals an absorption at ~ 220-225 cm-1, as-signable to a M-l absorption. IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT: THE POLITICS OF REPARATIVE THERAPY Patrick Lagua, (Dr. Lisa Diamond), Gen-der Studies, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112 Since the discursive construction of the "homosexual" identity in the early 20th century, numerous techniques and practices have been created to cure the homosexual of his/her affliction: the de-sire for sexual contact with persons of the same sex. These techniques varied widely and included chemical, psycho-analytic, and even physical bodily alter-ations. The aim of this work is to present a Foucauldian analysis of these tech-niques and practices. Through this ap-proach we can better analyze the larger social and cultural contexts that allow such practices to be created and pro-mulgated. Second, this type of analysis construes therapy as a site of politics. Mainstream social science research has often pointed to the damaging effects and inefficacy of sexual reorientation therapies to the individual, without ana-lyzing the larger political implications of such practices. I hope to correct that er-ror with this work. Third, this thesis will explore the possibility of resistance with-in the disciplinary techniques of repara-tive therapy. As Foucault has stated, "there are no relations of power without resistances." Is there any possibility of a power reversal in such a panoptical construct as reparative therapy? |
