Show AUTONOMY MACHINE Cameron Lewis, Matt Hintze, Jake Smith (Al Smith) (Julio Bermudez) (Libby Haslam) College of Architecture and Planning, University of Utah Mainstream media in the U.S. has a great influence upon the minds of millions of Americans. The media, especially traditional television and cable networks, have become the primary means by which people receive information. Through television shows, advertisements, and newscasts, the propaganda of elite groups of people who hold positions of power is broadcast. Therefore, the information presented to the public is narrow, biased, and much of the time inaccurate. A large percentage of the public does not understand this and has become addicted to these strong influences. Many rely solely on these sources for information and struggle to think indepen-dently. As a result the population has been trained to think as an assimilated machine. This loss of autonomy is dangerous be-cause it fosters narrowness of thought, lack of individuality, and a depletion of creativity. In order to overcome the affects of main-stream media, the public must be made aware of these dan-gers and recognize the need to be independent in their thoughts and actions. Their minds must break free from dependency on mainstream media; they must question their sources of informa-tion and gain their own individual opinions and beliefs about the world in which they live.
