This special concrete consists not only of the same basiJc materials used in regular concrete: Portland cement, aggregate, and water; but also includes special materials, known as additives, that impart the lightweight, high-performance characteristics needed in canoe construction and competition. This research consists of developing an optimum cement m ix design to create the high-performance concrete needed to build and race a concrete canoe at a national competition. Research findings deemed the mix design to entail water, cement, fly ash, silica fume, fibesglasSi glass m icrospheres, Jightweigjit aggregate, polymers, and sand. After initial testing, four rttis designs were formulated, which comprise differing amounts of the aforementioned materials. Test sampJe paneJs made with the four different mrxes will be sprayed and cut into thin sections to be placed in a flexural testing device. Extensive testing will be performed over a span of two months to determine the optimum mrx with early strength gain, high flexural strength, and the lowest density. The selected high-performance concrete m ixture will be used to build the canoe that will represent the University of Utah during the national competition. 39 |
