Yanm. south hots In addition to these extensions on reservation allotments, the trust on all Indian homesteads and allotments on the public domain which would otherwise expire during the calendar year has been extended for one year by an Executive order. Authority for these exten-sions will be found in the fifth section of the act of February 8, 1887 (24 Stat. L., 388), section 11 of the act of March 2, 1889 (25 Stat. L., 888-892), and the act of June 21, 1906 (34 Stat. L., 326). PATENTS IN FEE. . Patents in fee simple are issued under the prohsion$ of the act of May 8, 1906 (34 Stat. L., 182), and the act of June 25, 1910 (36 Stat. L., 855). During the past year 1,298 applications for patents in fee have been received, of which 350 were denied and 949 ap-proved, involving an- area of 132,647.30 acres. During-the past year the Secretary of the Interior has appointed competency commissions composed of some of the best men in the Indian Service, who know the Indian and the Indian question, and whose duty it wasto make a personal investigation with a view of determining the Indians who are fully qualified to care for their' ownaffairs. Examinations have been made on the following reser-vations: Yankton, Santee, Flathead, Clieyenne River, Standing Rock, Fort Peck, Umatilla, -and Coeur d7Alene. On the recommen-dation of the commissions thus appointed 576 fee patents have iasued, involving 97,842.41 acres, thus making the total number of fee patents issued during the year 1;525, involving an area of 220,489.7.1 .a cres. . - SALE OF INDIAN LAND. The sale of allotted and inherited Indian land is authorized by the acts of May 27, 1902 (32 Stat. L., 245), March 1, 1907 (34 Stat. L., 1015), May 29, 1008 (35 Stat. L., M), June 25, 1910 (38 Stat. L., ,855), and February 14,1913 (37 Stat. L., 678). |
