Show TAPE # 19 The following is a tape recording made at White Mesa, San Juan County Utah on August the 13th, 1980. The interviewee is Patty Mills Dutchie, who lives at White Mesa. The interviewers are Gregory Thompson and Floyd O'Neil of the American West Center, University of Utah. O'N: Mrs. Dutchie, where were you born? PD: In Colorado. O'N: In which part of Colorado? PD: Oh, the place they call Navajo Springs. That was our headquarters when I was born. O'N: I see. Now Navajo Springs is a little bit southeast of Towaoc? PD: Yah. Just on the highway, you know. O'N: Yah, going south toward New Mexico. PD: Yah. O'N: I see. And had your parents lived at Navajo Springs a long time? PD: They did. O'N: Now, were you old enough to remember it when they moved the agency from Navajo Springs up to Towaoc? PD: No, but my parents said that I was born right at that time when they built that school there. That time that the flu broke out was a long time ago. O'N: About 1919. PD: Eighteen, I think. O'N: 1918. PD: Yah. 0* N: I see. The place then was Navajo Springs, Colorado. And what was your father's name? PD: James Mills. |
