In 1940, th e r e w e re 28 s te e l- f a b r ic a tin g and m a c h in e ry -m a n u fa c tu rin g f ir m s in U tah, em ploying 850 w ith an n u al w ages of $1,500,000. In 1968 th e r e w e re m o re th an 191 f ir m s , em ploying o v e r 7,396, M ost of th e s e f ir m s a r e in th e S alt L ake a r e a . M in e r a l P r o d u c tio n P r a c tic a lly e v e ry m in e r a l needed in m o d e rn m a n u fa c tu re is found in U tah, w ithin a c o m p a ra tiv e ly s h o r t d ista n c e fro m S alt L ake C ity.
