John leaned his forehead against the platform wall. "Rawhunt was like a brother to me," he groaned. "It seems I did not know and understand him as well as I believed. "Oh God in heaven, how could he betray me thus?" he cried out. I could answer him not, though I knew well the anguish he felt. "Tomorrow we shall look for Margaret then," John said when his emotions were quieted. "This day is going and it would be folly to be out after dusk. "It is not unknown for a person to survive a scalping," he added gently. "I promise we shall look again tomorrow. And for Anne and Cisly also," he continued, when he saw me open my mouth to speak. Harwood was calling us to gather about him. When we were together, he said, "We know not if any other white people are alive in Virginia. I deem it folly to leave the fort to seek safety at another settlement, not knowing if any still exist. We will stay here and try to survive as best we can. If others yet live, let them find us. Now let us kneel and thank God that we are, indeed, alive, and pray for those people who |
