"It will indeed be a lucky man who wins you for his bride." His words did not penetrate my mind for the joy I was feeling. John placed his hand under my elbow and we resumed our journey homeward. Long after .he had delivered me to my door, my elbow was warm where his hand had been. It was not until early the next morning, as I lay waiting for the coming day to claim me, that I recalled those words he said: "It will indeed be a lucky man who wins you for his bride." For a moment a warm flush of pleasure spread through me. Then I thought again. Perhaps he thought the man lucky only because I would bring land to the marriage. My mattress rustled angrily as I tossed and turned, waiting for the swish of Margaret's skirts to announce the beginning of another day. ******************** August, 1620 The population of our hundred grows.
