Show Page 20 wind from the west. And this morning the trees themselves loomed on the horizon, appearing to rise directly from the waves. Captain Thompson said 'twas Cape Henry and we are now only a short distance from James Towne. ******************** Such a pother of excitement. Faces were being washed, hair rolled and clothes brushed. Some people were bringing out fresh clothing that they had saved especially for their arrival in James Towne. Everyone seemed a stranger with her fresh-scrubbed face and her clean gown. Anne looked very fetching in her green dimity skirt and bodice. Even Rose was scrubbed and dressed, though to my thinking her bodice was cut much too low, exposing a part of her best kept covered before lads who had had few women amongst them. Having no desire to search for a husband, I was content to wear my blue fustian gown. It was plain, but since I was in mourning it would be satisfactory. So there I sat on deck, recording all I saw about me, while the other passengers scuttled about making much ado and trying to turn themselves into the kind of wench they thought would catch the eye of the most handsome man in Virginia. While they fussed and dithered, I had time to look at the new world around me. |
