Show With Love.,. Both quickly shared this discovery with Janet Taggart and Evelyn Chapman. If something was to be done, it would have to start with themselves, so they decided to get a law passed by the state legislature requiring the education of all handicapped children. Simple, direct, straight forward and usually, impossible. The four brought to the challenge, wide professional experience: Taggart, a writer, leader in specialized education, knowledgeable in publicity and organization; Dolan, with her own TV talk show, had worked with sales and conventions; Chapman, a Phi Beta Kappa, legal secretary and expert in finance; Lindquist, a civics teacher, outstanding student while attending the University of Washington, Board President of Seattle Guilds for Retarded Children, Northwest Center and vice-president of the Washington Association of Retarded Citizens. Unfortunately, they were still amateurs in getting a law passed. As a first step, Dolan invited the president of the Student Bar Association, University of Washington, George Breck, to a meeting. He brought another law student, Bill Dussault. At that first meeting, the missing expertise was supplied by Joe Davis, executive director of the Washington State Labor Council who had over twenty years in lobbying and working with the legislature. After much discussion, he said ,"First, find the cost to the state to finance such a law so it can be placed in the budget." Money may toot buy happiness, but lack of it in |
