Show With Love... 2 Coolidge, was hyperactive. Since the public schools were not prepared for hyperactivity, there was nothing for him in Seattle at age of six years. The fourth woman, Cecile Lindquist, a mother and teacher, had years of volunteer effort with the retarded. They were brought together by the Northwest Center for the Retarded in Seattle, which was organized by parents who believed in family-based care for the retarded. They were looking for a better way than bazaars to finance the children's education when a subcommittee of the Washington State Senate met to examine inequalities in the education for the handicapped. Among those invited to testify at the capital in Olympia were the Department of Public Instruction and representatives of the Northwest Center. Dolan and Lindquist presented a film showing the progress made with children who were considered uneducable. When the experts in special education were called, a legislator asked, "How many children are not now in school programs?" No one seemed to know. "What types of handicaps could be served by an education bill?" Again, no information. "We were shocked", said Katie Dolan, an intense,dark-eyed woman. "We came away knowing who our enemies were and they did not even know that they were the enemy." |
