That summer the BLM put her to work in the s t a t e office compiling grazing records. She studied the appeals of ranchers viho vianted to graze more c a t t l e on BLM lands, and organized papers in cases vihere grazing p r i v i l e g e s had been denied. Jan learned a l o t that summer, mostly that she'd r a t h e r be out doing field work. In June, 1977, Jan graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Range Management. The BLM had guaranteed her a job after graduation, but Jan wasn't ready to go to work. "I was really burned out," she says. "I d i d n ' t viant to go to school, I d i d n 't want to go to work, I d i d n ' t viant to do anything for a while. For four years I 'd been aviay from home most of the time, taking c l a s s e s nine months of the year and viorking every summer. I vianted a long vacation at home with my mother and dad and s i s t e r . When I got in touch viith the Bureau of Land Management and told them I ' d r a t h e r not begin u n t i l the first of the year, they were understanding. They s a i d , 'Okay, w e ' ll have something for you then.*" |
