Show 25 Though Janey and Jerry saw several hunting parties in the hours vihen they patrolled the boundaries, none of the hunters viere inside the park. Instead they waited at the borders, knowing that elk migrate out of the park in October. Today's hunting regulations prevent anything like the thoughtless slaughter of the past century. It was time to move on to other cabins which needed restocking, but before they left Harebell, Janey and Jerry had to replenish the viood supply. Throughout the summer, other park employees had scouted for dead trees in the area, cutting the fallen trunks with hand sawa and leaving sections of log knovin as rounds. Janey vient to viork viith a hatchet splitting the rounds into kindling. When Harebell vias stocked, cleaned, sealed against animals and locked against trespassers, Janey and her supervisor started for Fox Creek, Howell, and Thoroughfare, the other cabins vihich needed supplying on that trip. Each cabin is called by name - Yellowstone is full of descriptive names. By the end of tvio vieeks vihen they returned to South Entrance, riding through a thick vihiteness of snovi untouched except for the horses' prints, Janey was calling the park "home." |
