Show 48 man-made f i r e had been put out promptly because i t vias in a camping area which many people used, the much larger nature-caused wilderness fire was s t i l l allowed to burn. Visitors were not permitted anywhere near the danger area. By autumn, vihen cool vieather and rain put out the Heart Lake f i r e, it had covered 5»000 acres. That seems like a sizable area, yet it represents only £ of 1% of the total extent of Yellowstone. The acreage had been "let burn" because of a new policy which recognizes that f i r e, when i t is not man-caused, is part of nature's way of reneviing the forest. |
