Show 15 a brief history of the United States in three languages, and with sealed copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Carved in granite deep inside the mountain, the inscriptions would be safe from erosion so that thousands of years from novi, people would understand Mount Rushmore's historical significance. But the Hall of Records, as Borglum named it, was never completed. Gutzon Borglum was enthralled with his sculptures. In his own viords, he tried to "find and release the faces of four great Americans within that granite mountain." He eagerly reported, "The brow [of Washington] has emerged, amazing in mass, vigor and beauty of form... the great face seemed to belong to the mountain. It took on the elemental courage of the rocks surrounding it." In spite of Borglum's visionary bent of mind, he did an incredible engineering job in sculpting the rock with dynamite. Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln stare solemnly from granite, vihite under bright sunshine, buff colored at twilight. Two million visitors come each year to marvel at the colossal proportions of the four presidential faces. In that holiday week of 1975? the visitors may have noticed an unusually large number of uniformed rangers and park police patrolling the area, but few bothered to ask questions. Which is the viay the rangers wanted it. As things turned out, no disturbance marred the holidays, perhaps because of the heavy security. Though the hours were long, Janey enjoyed being part of the law enforcement detail. "I was accepted as a member of the team. Nobody said, 'Oh, she can't do it because she's female.' I just did everything |
