Show COLLEGIATE LIFE

SCHOOL NOTES
DEBATING COMING UP.
After chapel on Monday the thirteenth Mr. Johns read to the school a letter from the University Debating committee, suggesting that instead of having preliminaries, semi-finals, and a final to determine the championship of the state, tha[t] this championship idea be done away with altogether, as raising the desire to win above the educational value of debating in the minds of the debaters. Instead of the former inter-scholastic league the University committee suggests that the high schools of each section of the state unite in dual or triangular leagues, with not more than two debates a year for any team. In favor of this is urged that more contests can not be entered into and have the teams prepare for them as they should; also, that the number of debates held under the former system had encouraged memoritur speaking, which is always to be avoiding in debating.
Mr. Johns then called for remarks. As everyone seemed favorable, he requested all those who wished to try for the team to meet him in the office at recess. Six have so far volunteered. The question for debate has not yet been decided upon, as the University committee has been awaiting the decision of the different schools in regard to the suggested changes.

Monday, the 27th, school was held in the gymnasium room of the girls' dormitory. The indirect heating system which heats the air for the ventilaters, was out of order, so we were moved to avoid freezing. Now that the cold weather is over the steam pipes are, or seem to be, in perfect condition. Every time the baseball captain announces that practice will start at the beginning of the next week it ups and snows. However, it seems as if their wish will be granted at last, as the weather is clearing up.
Work will be started immediately on the baseball field. It will be situated west of the girls' dormitory. Also showers and a locker room will be placed in the basement of Converse Hall.
Mrs. Chung, the mother of Edith Chung, a member of the Freshman class, died Wednesday, the first. The Freshman class presented flowers for the funeral, which was held Thursday.
Mr. Sweazey has been ill the last two weeks, which has kept him from his classes in spite of their ardent desire for learning. We trust we will have him back by Monday, the 6th, which will be before this goes to press.
The Collegiate Institute needs some songs and yells which are distinctively its own. The songs we have had in the past have either been outright adaptations of popular songs, or our own words set to some familiar melody. We have never had a song that we could really call our own. Now we are in need of one. The baseball team must receive loyal support, not only in our minds, but in our vociferous support at the games. The same thing applies to yells. We need, first to get a yell-master, and second, for the whole school to remain after it has shaken the school-room dust off of its feet and make the steam(?) pipes ring with its shout of victory.
