Mr. Faunce, of the Fifth Avenue church New York City, in a paper before the Minister's Conference says concerning "Pilgrim's Progress," that much of the experience embodied therein grew out of misinterpretations of God's word, and for several reasons is not typical of the Christian experience of our time. 1. Its despair of this world. No conquest of it for God was to him conceivable. 2. In Pilgrim's excruciating agony over sin. Hungering after righteousness, rather than the awful sense of fear is the modern experience. 3. The constant uncertainty as to the final issue of his pilgrimage, which is un-scriptural. 4. The constant dwelling on the absence of Christ, rather than regarding him as the present friend. Moral: The Bible is still in the lead as a text book on Christian experience.
