| Abstract |
Abbott (b. 1923) recalls his childhood in Sutherland, Utah. He joined the Marine Corps in November 194 and took basic training in California. He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, 8th Marines, 8th Regiment, E Company. He served in American Samoa and took part in battles on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian. He later became part of a combat training group at Camp Pendleton. Interviewed by Benjamin Bahlmann. 106 pages. |

Show MARK L. ABBOTT PRIL 2001 MLA: Yes, years after. BB: Years, that's what I heard. MLA: People was returning, going back to their country. But I don t know if that was real or not, whether I was protected or not, but I know I sure felt spooky. And I followed my instincts. BB: Did you get those a lot in combat? Do you get a certain battle instinct? MLA: I think you do. I don't know. I felt like, looking back on it, I feel like I was lucky. I was very lucky. BB: So Saipan, how did that wrap up for you, then? They relieved you again and then did they take you off the island or where did you go? MLA: Well, I don't remember about relief. No doubt we were. I don't know who did it. But we went to Tinian. That was just within small boat distance; we didn't have to get on the ship. Instead of hitting the harbor [leafing through pages] ... I wonder if they have an index. There's one. We're looking for Tinian, right? BB: Right. [ discussion of page numbers] MLA: This is the main harbor down here. BB: So you went in there? MLA: No, we went in here. This was just a narrow beach, but they made a diversion here. They come in and shelled it and acted like they was going to. I think, seems like we was ... no, I guess we was just setting by. I think they thought they'd put us in the boats and then they decided to just run empty boats. But they made a feint towards it. By this time, we was landing right on this little small narrow beach down here. They had ramps 84 |
