| Abstract |
Abbott (b. 1923) recalls his childhood in Sutherland, Utah. He joined the Marine Corps in November 194 and took basic training in California. He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, 8th Marines, 8th Regiment, E Company. He served in American Samoa and took part in battles on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian. He later became part of a combat training group at Camp Pendleton. Interviewed by Benjamin Bahlmann. 106 pages. |

Show MARK L. ABBOTT PRI , 2001 MLA: Yes, it takes a little time to pack and get over there loaded and all that tuff. BB: Where did they send you from American Samoa? MLA: To Guadalcanal. We went to Guadalcanal and the night we was supposed to go in the Japanese was coming in or they were there or something. Anyway all at once we turned tail and started to run in our transports, of course. I guess it was organized, but they was full tilt, going full speed, spreading out, I guess, or getting away from Guadalcanal. BB: Did you have any special training for this, before you were sent out to Guadalcanal? MLA: We was training all the time there in Samoa, different problems. BB: Beach assault? Did you ever train for a beach assault in American Samoa at all? Or did that come later? MLA: No, I don't think we ever actually did get in boats and come ashore. I can't ever remember doing that. BB: So they took the whole gth Marines, correct? MLA: Yes. BB: And they took you out to Guadalcanal, and then did you disembark down into the smaller boats? Is that correct? MLA: Yes, there's no pier there. It was all disembarked into the smaller boats. We went ashore and it was just a few days before we was up on the lines after we got there. Anyway, that night we made the run. BB: Were you in the smaller boats when they turned around? 25 |
