| Abstract |
Abbott (b. 1923) recalls his childhood in Sutherland, Utah. He joined the Marine Corps in November 194 and took basic training in California. He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, 8th Marines, 8th Regiment, E Company. He served in American Samoa and took part in battles on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian. He later became part of a combat training group at Camp Pendleton. Interviewed by Benjamin Bahlmann. 106 pages. |

Show MARK L. ABBOTT PRIL 2001 on his side. Martin, our anti-tank man was laying right close to the tr ads of the tank wounded. I pulled him a little distance away and started looking for Martin s pack which had some anti-tank rifle grenades in it. The tank started to turn and pushed Martin aside. I was still looking for that pack when I looked up again the tank was gone. I don't think he fired a shot while he was there. He must have been gathering information only. BB: So what else happened that day? How many men ... MLA: After a while, we got word and pulled back because they were going to strafe again. So we did. The runner came up and told us to pull back. So we started doing. We had to pick up this fellow and get him back. We left the BAR man there. He hadn't moved for a long time and his name was Albert Strange and I always felt bad about him [pauses]. Anyway, we pulled back and we was disorganized. I didn't really get back to my outfit, the command, until a little later on, maybe the next day. That night I spent, I don't know, well, it was over on Red beach ... END OF SIDE A, TAPE 2 BB: When you pulled back, what happened during the day before nighttime came? You had all day. Wasn't there ... MLA: Well, I guess ... I don't know; you lose track of time. BB: Did you take any pillboxes or any of those concrete .. .I've seen pictures of it. They had quite a few of those big mounds of underground bunkers. MLA: No, I don't know ifl did. We fired into them a lot and usually sent in a demolition crew with dynamite or explosives to blow them up, with charges in them. But they were 55 |
