JUDSEN WAS BORN ON JANUARY 17, 1924. THE PERSONS ATTENDING THIS INTERVIEW IS MYSELF, FRANCE MERRILL; MY HUSBAND, ALVIN MERRILL; JUDSEN A. DURFEE AND HI WIFE MARGARET MERRILL DURFEE. JAD: ... and I was ready to be drafted anyway by the government, and I went to what they call a voluntary draft. We went down and I joined the engineer corp, the Aviation Engineers. I thought that would be a good service to be in, and not so dangerous. But I ah, was shipped overseas on January- oh, not January- October I guess it was of '43. FHM: In 1943? JAD: In 1943 .. FHM: And you served in which military, which service? JAD: The Army. I was an engineer. We went overseas to Hollandia, New Guinea, and we started building highways- not highways, roads and stuff for the Army and things, and for the generals headquarters, and things like that. I served from '4 3 to 194 5. I got out in January of '46 actually. I went home in '45. But during this period of time, we started at Hollandia. We built roads, like I said, for the Army to travel and do the things for the infantry and to get supplies. And we moved on up the islands, I can't remember them all, Finschhafen, Hollandia. At Hollandia, New Guinea we were there for a couple of days, and then shipped over to a little island that was called Tami (?)River. At Tami river we was putting in an airbase for the P-47's and fighter planes to bring in supplies and move from that office. And we had quite a time over there with the snipers and stuff like that, the enemy, and we had to dig these holes and sleep in foxholes and all. And it was a real scary 2 |
