Show MAX B. GORDON Mar h I , 2 - they got in poker games and by the time we got to the Mariana I land thi guy hipp d home $4,000, and that was a lot of money. That was a fortune. The next day th big wheels on the Merchant Marine ship put an order out: no more gambling with the Gls. BB: Was this guy part of your outfit? MBG: No, he wasn't part of the outfit. He was going over there. We didn't know where we was going. BB: You've got people from all over the place. You had a professional card player, probably (laughs). MBG: Yes, he was good at it. Anyway, on that ship going over, all the way over we got Tokyo Rose and she was always on the radio. They was talking about Iwo Jima and they was really fighting in Iwo Jima and I had an idea that's where we were going, because they were really knocking them off over there. But we didn't go to Iwo Jima; we went to the Philippines. BB: Is that where your ship actually took you, to the Philippines? MBG: Yes. It took us forty-eight days from Hawaii to the Philippines. BB: Forty-eight days. Do you recall any of those days. Do they all blend in? MBG: They blended in. BB: Do you have any idea how you passed your time? MBG: Yes, I set out there on the deck and that's the only time I ever got a suntan in my life. l was out there on deck, back underneath, all we had on was shorts and I got a suntan for the first time in my life. We took forty-eight days of saltwater showers. If you've ever had a saltwater shower, it's no fun. BB: It's sticky (laughs). 33 |
